Long ago, a rabbit, a monkey, and a fox met a starving old man — who was, in truth, a god in disguise. This god was Śakra, ruler of the heavens, who had come to test their virtue.

The monkey gathered fruit, the fox brought what food it could find, but the rabbit had nothing to give. In a deeply selfless act, the rabbit offered itself, leaping into the fire so the old man would not go hungry.

Moved by this incredible sacrifice, Śakra revealed his true form, saved the rabbit, and honored its compassion by placing its image on the Moon.

In this ancient tale from the Jataka Tales, the rabbit is said to be a past life of Gautama Buddha — a symbol of ultimate kindness, selflessness, and spiritual wisdom.

Cultural Note

This story is inspired by an ancient Buddhist tale from the Jataka Tales. In its original form, the god who tests the animals is Śakra, not the Buddha himself. However, the rabbit is believed to be a past life of Gautama Buddha — making its act of self-sacrifice a powerful symbol of compassion and spiritual awakening.

This deeper meaning is what makes the Moon Rabbit not just a beautiful legend, but a timeless expression of kindness and virtue.

We chose the Moon Rabbit because it represents wisdom, selflessness, and renewal. At 3DShards, we love creating fantastical, mystical experiences, not just simple fun. And while we’re inspired by Eastern folklore, we rarely get the chance to create something truly meaningful — this was one of those moments.

It’s available for free with every paid order until April 12. After that, it will be exclusive to our supporters (for free).
